Flight-1 at Twenty: How a Big Idea Became the Gold Standard in Canopy Education

In the early 2000s and prior, if you wanted to become a better canopy pilot, your options were limited. You jumped more, you watched others, you listened to anyone in the landing area or around the bonfire who had more jumps than you — and you hoped the advice you were getting was reliable. What changed things wasn't a single moment or a single person — it was the convergence of two pioneering forces in the sport, and the people behind them, who recognized that skydivers at every level deserved something more. The Performance Designs Factory Team, founded in 2002, and Scott Miller's Freedom of Flight School, established in 1999, came together with a shared conviction: that canopy flight deserved to be taught properly.

What grew from that convergence, formalized two decades ago as Flight-1, has become one of the most respected canopy flight schools in the world — in both the civilian skydiving community and the military. The anniversary deserves to be marked. This is how it happened.

Before the Beginning

The story of Flight-1 doesn't start with a company. It starts with a question being asked in several places at once: how do we make this safer?

Canopy piloting was growing. More skydivers were chasing the precision and thrill of high performance landings. But the need for structured education was never limited to those pushing the performance envelope — it extended to every skydiver, from the very beginning of their journey all the way through to the top performing pilots. Yet the infrastructure to deliver it simply wasn't there. Canopy coaching was largely informal, with no structured pathway, no consistent methodology, and no reliable way for a skydiver to know whether the instruction they were receiving was trustworthy. The sport was evolving rapidly — canopies were becoming faster, more responsive, more unforgiving — but the knowledge needed to fly them well was still mostly being passed on informally, inconsistently, and often incompletely.

What would eventually become Flight-1 emerged from some of the most influential forces in the sport at that time. The PD Factory Team were at the leading edge of competitive canopy flight, pushing the boundaries of what was possible on the world stage. Scott Miller had previously founded the Freedom of Flight School, building a rigorous, structured approach to canopy education and developing the Essential Skills Curriculum as a standalone body of work — with Jimmy Tranter working alongside him, helping train students. At the time, both the PD Factory Team and Freedom of Flight were taking coaching on the road, finding more demand than they could handle. The knowledge was there. What was missing was the architecture to deliver it at scale.

The Launch

In early 2004, the first Flight-1 canopy courses emerged at Skydive DeLand. For anyone who attended them, the difference was immediately apparent. These weren't informal coaching sessions or loosely organized jump days. They were multi-day programs built around classroom ground school, clearly defined jump objectives, and detailed landing video debriefs — every class, every exercise, every jump sequenced deliberately. Skills were introduced, practiced, and assessed in a controlled environment designed to build both genuine competence and the confidence that comes from knowing how to react correctly when it matters.

The response confirmed what the founders had suspected: skydivers at every level were hungry for this. They wanted to understand what they were doing and why. The demand was real, and it had been waiting for someone to meet it.

By 2006, Flight-1 formally incorporated. Founded by Ian Bobo, JC Colclasure, Jay Moledzki, Shannon Pilcher, and Jonathan Tagle, the organization now had the structure to match its ambitions. A curriculum. A team. A name. And already, a reputation.

Military courses had been running since 2005, and growing operational demand was one of the driving forces behind incorporating in 2006. Working alongside elite military units brought its own lessons. Flight-1 quickly understood that exceptional instruction alone wasn't enough — earning and keeping military trust required the same discipline, structure, and accountability the military itself demands. Committing to that standard didn't just make Flight-1 a better military training partner. It made the entire organization sharper, and that fed directly back into the sport program in ways that continue to define Flight-1 today.

Behind the scenes, one person played a quietly essential role in holding everything together: Maxine Tate, COO and CFO from 2010 to 2018. Her steady hand through multiple leadership transitions was instrumental in keeping the operational and sport sides of Flight-1 moving forward through every change in between.

Building the Architecture

The years that followed were years of growth, refinement, and expanding reach. Flight-1 was delivering courses globally, building its instructor base, and confronting honestly the gaps that emerged as the program scaled. In 2009, a comprehensive curriculum review led to significant refinements — greater emphasis on survival skills, structured progression, and a consistent methodology ensuring every student received the same high standard of instruction, regardless of where in the world they took their course.

That same year, Flight-1 expanded through the X Project — a program that simultaneously grew both the PD Factory Team and the Flight-1 instructor base. The individuals brought in — Tommy Dellibac, Ian Drennan, Jessica Edgeington, Pablo Hernandez, and Brian Vacher — were among the best canopy pilots in the world: competitors, national team members, athletes at the very top of the sport. What Flight-1 looked for, alongside athletic ability, was something harder to teach: the capacity to communicate clearly, to connect with a student as a human being, to make complex skills genuinely accessible to the person standing in front of you. Where that raw potential existed, Flight-1 would develop the rest.

Also in 2009, Brian Vacher's Safe Flight School — already the leading canopy school in Europe — was integrated into Flight-1, giving the organization a genuine European foundation and the ability to deliver its curriculum on a truly global scale.

In 2012, the Flight-1 Canopy Series expanded into a comprehensive, formalized curriculum — a structured development pathway building complete canopy pilots — from foundational canopy skills and advanced flying and landing techniques, through flocking, all the way to mutant flying and high-performance competition. The curriculum continues to evolve under Brian Vacher as Director of Education and Paul Dorward as Director of Sport.

Expanding the Mission

By 2015, Flight-1 was doing something no canopy training organization had done before. Under the leadership of Ian Bobo — engineer, original PD Factory Team member, and now CEO — Flight-1 Tech was born, with a single purpose: to develop training tools that extend what great coaching can achieve.

What has emerged is a range of products that each stand alone. The S1M, which drew significant excitement when unveiled at the 2025 PIA Symposium, is unlike anything else in canopy training — an immersive simulator capable of replicating full-body, multi-axis canopy flight with a fidelity that must be experienced to be appreciated. It offers both military and civilian jumpers something actual parachute flights cannot: unlimited repetitions, day or night, in any simulated wind condition.

Separate entirely, the Parachute Landing Assistant uses LIDAR-based sensors to provide real-time flare height and rate guidance. Tested across more than 20,000 military jumps, it teaches the sight picture for the flare significantly faster, with a measurable reduction in student injuries. And Flight-1's clear air-to-air communication systems — a longtime cornerstone of in-air coaching — have been developed into a robust platform that elevates real-time instruction to a standard previously unavailable in the sport.

The Flight-1 Military program, led by Stuart Schoenfeld as Director of Military Operations, has grown into a comprehensive training pathway for the modern military canopy pilot — covering essential canopy control, stack flying, lead jumper responsibilities, and operations in austere environments including urban and alpine terrain. It is work Flight-1 is deeply honored to do. That trust is never taken lightly, and the standards those programs demand have raised the bar across the entire organization.

In 2019, Flight-1 conducted its largest single instructor expansion — twelve new cadre members through an intensive week-long program at Skydive DeLand. The same standard applied: exceptional performance in the air, and the human skills to translate that into genuine learning for someone else.

The Standard-Bearers

The caliber of the people who have built and sustained Flight-1 is perhaps best reflected in how the broader skydiving community has recognized them. Three founders have been inducted into the Skydiving Hall of Fame: Ian Bobo in 2021, Shannon Pilcher in 2023, and Jay Moledzki, whose induction has been publicly announced for this year — arriving, fittingly, in Flight-1's anniversary year.

The cadre carry that same distinction. Pete Allum — world-renowned across multiple skydiving disciplines — was inducted in 2022. Jim Cowan, a CRW champion whose influence on the sport runs extraordinarily deep, followed in 2025. And Brian Pangburn — a CRW champion who has spent his career developing new techniques and training methods — has been announced as an inductee for this year alongside Jay. Five individuals connected to Flight-1 honored by the Skydiving Hall of Fame. But they represent something larger: every member of the Flight-1 cadre arrives with their own remarkable story — world records, national titles, decades of teaching, and a commitment to giving back to the sport that shaped them.

The pandemic years tested every organization. At Flight-1, they produced something unexpected: the most significant curriculum overhaul in the organization's history. Led by Brian Vacher and Jay Moledzki, and drawing on input from more than fifty leading canopy instructors worldwide, the revision introduced a fully peer-reviewed system, a fully inclusive learning model, and clearly defined learning objectives — before the jump, during the jump, and after. New tools — including the Joe Jumper articulated model and the reemphasis of Active Piloting as a core principle — transformed how skills were taught across the global instructor network. The sport may have been operating at reduced capacity. Flight-1 used the time to build something better.

What Twenty Years Means

Two phrases have guided Flight-1 from its earliest days and still frame everything it does: Raising the Standard. Flying Better Together.

The people who have driven this organization for two decades don't look back for long. The standard they are raising is always the next one. The learning never stops — not for students, and not for the instructors who teach them.

That commitment is not incidental. It is structural. It is built into how the organization trains, evaluates, and evolves — and nowhere is that more visible than in DeLand, Florida.

Flying Better Together — The Flight-1 Forum

Every two years, something happens in DeLand that the skydiving world doesn't fully see — but every Flight-1 student eventually feels.

Instructors who are normally scattered across continents, time zones, and hemispheres converge on Skydive DeLand for the Flight-1 Forum. They arrive as friends and colleagues. They leave as a sharper, tighter, more capable team — and every course delivered worldwide in the two years that follow is better for it.

The March 2025 Forum was no exception. Across several packed days, the cadre worked through structured workshop sessions covering both the sport and military sides of the curriculum — refining techniques, stress-testing teaching strategies, and doing what a room full of the world's best canopy instructors can uniquely do: push each other. The weekend prior, a dedicated flocking camp laid the groundwork for a full Sport Flocking curriculum revamp — one of several meaningful updates to emerge from the week. Military instructors dedicated a full day to technical tools and operational systems.

Then came the jumps.

Six teams of six instructors. A competition format built to demand as much strategy and communication as skill. One challenge put every team member on a different canopy type, racing the clock from first to last to land in a tight target. The next raised the stakes — the widest possible wingloading spread between jumpers, again timed from first to last down, with winds pushing above 30mph above 1,000 feet — conditions that demanded sharp thinking and sharp flying in equal measure. The jumps were close, competitive, and full of laughter — the kind of competition where the score absolutely mattered, but what was happening between the teams was something equally valuable: the camaraderie that only comes from doing something genuinely challenging and fun together.

Beyond the competition there were sport and mutant flocking jumps, CRW, military jumps, and formations that had never been done before. To be under canopy in close proximity to so many trusted, highly skilled pilots — knowing that every single person around you has the ability and awareness to match — is one of those experiences that reminds you exactly why you got into this sport in the first place.

By the end of the week, the cadre was tired and energized in equal measure — the particular combination that only comes from days of jumping hard, learning from people you respect, and laughing more than you expected to. Everyone walked away having grown. Everyone walked away proud to be part of something bigger than themselves.

That is not accidental. It is the point.

Flight-1 invests in its instructors the way it asks its instructors to invest in their students — completely, and without reservation. The Forum is the most visible expression of that commitment. But it runs through everything: every course, every debrief, every jump. When a student steps into a Flight-1 course anywhere in the world, they are not just getting a curriculum. They are joining a family — one that has spent twenty years building the knowledge, the standards, and the genuine care to make every person who walks through the door a safer, more capable, more confident canopy pilot.
