Flight-1 Tandem Canopy Course: Flying The Tandem Wing
May 2nd, 2016
Every year, Flight-1 instructors travel from all over the world to Deland, Florida where it literally becomes a meeting of the minds to discuss our canopy course curriculum. Over the past decade, we have not only strived to continuously improve our existing curriculum of canopy flight, but new curriculum has also been developed in response to the high demand for safety in our sport. In February of this year, our instructors responded to the call for a canopy course designed specifically for the Tandem Instructor.
So – what’s new with Flight-1?
We have a new course called 101T, “Flying The Tandem Wing”.
What will the TI learn in the 101T?
"Flying The Tandem Wing" (101T) the TI will fully understand the correct flare technique and develop the ability to debrief personal performance. The course defines the flight plan and covers a range of in air exercises including various different landing approaches. The course also focuses on advanced accuracy to ensure safety and consistency for the TI, videographer and dropzone.
What are the benefits of taking the 101T course?
The 101T course will allow tandem instructors to expand their understanding and knowledge of tandem canopy flight, from openings to landings. The TIs, their passengers, and DZOs will benefit from the 101T course: for TIs by improving confidence, consistency and efficiency under canopy; for passengers by improving the overall experience from improved performance of the staff; and for the DZO by improving your safety record and raising the standard of service.
What is the structure of the 101T course?
It is a one day course that will consist of learning course content and theory in a classroom setting, as well as completing the hop n pops after each section. The Flight-1 instructor will also video and debrief the landing of each TI after every jump.
How many jumps will be made?
5 jumps will be made and will consist of 7500 feet hop and pops.
What are the requirements to take Flight 101T?
All students must be Sport Tandem qualified.
How does the course work with multiple TI’s?
The course consists of a minimum of 6 instructors (maximum of 10 instructors) who will be working together in pairs, switching between front and back during the 5 jumps.
What is the cost of the course?
The cost per person per course is $150 USD or the equivalent in another currency, plus jumps, plus any related travel costs for the instructor.
How do I know if the course is for me?
It’s simple. Don’t take our word for it - take their word! The Flight 101T course curriculum was developed and put into effect years ago for our military clients. Recently, we’ve experienced a high demand for the 101T course curriculum from our DZO customers at dropzones all over the world. Since the transition of the 101T course to our sport curriculum, we’ve taught two 101T courses at GoSkydive in the UK that were incredibly successful. Here are some of the comments from the TIs that took the 101T course:
Director, GoSkydive UK
"The Flight-1 tandem canopy course has become a regular and valued part of GoSkydive’s ongoing commitment to reducing risk in tandem skydiving. Flight-1's approach has always been professional while at the same time keeping it fun and engaging for our instructors. It's a great opportunity to share the latest learning and knowledge from the tandem skydiving industry at large. Through an open and no-ego approach, the Instructor quickly earns the respect and buy-in of our instructors, allowing for a positive and inspiring learning experience. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this course to any tandem skydiving operator serious about safety."
Instructor, GoSkydive UK
“Fantastic course all round, good mixture of theory and practical skydiving. The Instructor did not overload with too much information prior to each training jump. I believe it improved my overall tandem canopy handling a lot. Great course, well worth it".
Chief Instructor, GoSkydive UK
“I found the course to be useful in a number of ways.
Knowledge - From a theoretical point of view, the information is broken down into the relevant subjects and presented in such a way so you can directly link it to the practical exercises.
Hands on experience - The exercises allow you to experience a variety of concepts in a fun, safe environment. With exercises involving pitch + turn recovery, effective flaring, stall + stall recovery, you get to learn the full range of flight characteristics of the wing you’re flying. As a result, your flight becomes far more predictable, leading to an increase of confidence in what you're doing.
Detail - Through video debriefs, the Instructor teaches you how to isolate and analyze each part of your landings, leading to a better understanding of how to progress, becoming a safer canopy pilot.
I would recommend the course to anyone from starting out as a tandem instructor, to an experienced instructor with thousands of tandems. I have personally done over 4000 tandems and felt that I learned new concepts such as 'flight cycles' and 'visualizing a flight plan in reverse', in order to increase your accuracy. This is a great course that has helped me become a safer, more informed tandem instructor.”
How do I schedule a 101T course at my DZ?
To host a Flight-1 101T course at your dropzone, please contact us by email to firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll be glad to get that ball rolling for you!
Flight-1 Welcomes New Instructors to the Team
April 28th, 2016
February 2016 marked the ten year anniversary of Flight-1, signifying a decade long of raising the standard of canopy control. The growth of Flight-1 not only occurs through additional courses being offered as part of our curriculum, but also in the expansion of our team of instructors. We took the opportunity at our anniversary to welcome five new instructors to Flight-1 and we’re very excited to announce our newest members coming to a dropzone near you shortly:
New Flight-1 Instructors
Ben Lemay based out of Parachutisme Nouvel Air will be joining his brother Martin Lemay and our other Canadian instructor Philippe Thiboudeau in providing support to our Canadian students in English and in French. Ben is a member of the Canadian FS and VFS team Evolution, and both he and Martin are on the Canadian Canopy Piloting Team in 2016. As an experienced skydiver and a physics teacher, Ben will be bringing his knowledge and skills to the skydiving community throughout Canada.
Jimmy Tranter based out of Mile Hi Skydiving in Colorado has been teaching canopy control for decades, originally as part of Freedom of Flight with Scott Miller in Deland FL, and now up at Mile-Hi. We’re excited to have such an experienced and talented instructor on board, and we’re looking forward to having a Flight-1 campus up at Mile-Hi, the key dropzone servicing jumpers in Colorado, out at Longmont.
Expanding our team in Europe we first have Grim Swinnen from Skydive Flanders. He is a Belgian canopy pilot, an AFF-instructor, a videographer and a rigger with heaps of experience expanding over a decade. Grim will be teaching Flight-1 courses at the Skydive Flanders dropzones in Belgium on a regular basis and will also be travelling to the Netherlands and Luxembourg regions to pass on his knowledge to all skydivers that encompass the Benelux community.
Stefan Burstrom, based out of Skydive Stockholm in Sweden, has been a skydiver and fun jumper for 15 years while working full time as an Engineer in IT and electronic design. He is an experienced canopy pilot and has been heavily involved in the skydiving community acting as an advisor for the Swedish Parachute association in canopy related matters for the past 5 years. Stefan brings with him his canopy related experience and will utilize his skills by joining our ranks and hosting Flight-1 courses in Sweden and nearby dropzones.
Tom Gilmartin is based out of York, Western Australia and will be offering Flight-1 canopy courses across Australia and the Asia Pacific region. Tom has also been jumping for over a decade and has been on the Australian Canopy Piloting team since 2009. York is one of the largest and busiest sport jumper dropzones in the country, having also the largest swoop pond in the Southern Hemisphere. The addition of regular Flight-1 courses complements the York dropzone’s already busy sport jumper calendar of events while promoting safer skies and continued education around canopy flight.
Becoming a Flight-1 instructor is not an easy feat. Candidates have to go through an application process, which includes being vetted by the founding members. Once selected, the applicants are then invited to participate in a rigorous week-long training program in Deland, where the instructors are trained on the course curriculum and the standards set forth by Flight-1. It’s safe to say, these young men worked their tails off to prove that they had what it takes to be a Flight-1 instructor. Please join us in congratulating our newest members!
Stay Tuned…There’s More To Come!
We are also pleased to announce the expansion of our current course curriculum from the military courses into our sport courses, designed specifically for the Tandem Instructor. We’re calling this course 101T, “Flying The Tandem Wing.” Stay tuned for more details!

Flight-1 Ten Year Anniversary and Meet 'n' Greet at Skydive Deland
February 18th, 2016
Back in 2004, the members of the Performance Designs Factory Team (PDFT) partnered with visionary Scott Miller of Freedom of Flight with a goal to create a curriculum for teaching canopy control from the essential skills all the way through to high performance canopy piloting. In February 2006, their dream became a reality and Flight-1 was officially launched. Over the last ten years it has grown into the leading provider of canopy coaching and instruction in the sport, and a brand recognized around the world.
The success of Flight-1 isn’t just down to the quality of the comprehensive curriculum, it’s also down to the people who teach it. Over time, Flight-1 has expanded beyond the PDFT, welcoming a host of skilled, talented, and diverse athletes to the team. Now with over 30 sport and military instructors located all over the world, Flight-1 encompasses an unsurpassed breadth of experience both as coaches and as athletes. Individually, they are highly accomplished skydivers with a combined total of over 275,000 jumps.
Within our current instructor pool, 27 of our cadre are members of their National Teams, representing their countries at world level with 15 World Titles to their names. We are proud and incredibly honored to say that these individuals are a part of our Flight-1 family. It’s because of the camaraderie and mutual respect that exists amongst the cadre that allows us to continue to be inspired by each other, to grow as individuals and as a team, and it’s a large part of the reason why Flight-1 continues to flourish.
With that, the Flight-1 family is proud to announce that we are celebrating a milestone in our history, making 2016 our Ten Year Anniversary. We’d like to thank each and every one of you that have joined us in courses over the years, shared your feedback and been a part of the journey. You too continue to inspire us with your openness to learn and your desire to improve and have fun.
During the month of February, we will have a few things that will be taking place at our Headquarters in Deland, Florida. You can follow the celebrations with us on our Flight-1 Facebook Fan Page. If you’re in Deland, we invite you to join us during our Meet ‘N’ Greet to hang… or if you’re located elsewhere on the globe and you have any questions that you would like answered by our Flight-1 team, send us your questions on Facebook, using #Flight1TenYears.
20 February 2016: Meet ‘N’ Greet – with about 15 of our Flight-1 Instructors at The Perfect Spot at Skydive Deland.
23 February: Flight-1 Ten Year Anniversary Celebration
27-28 February: 2-for -1 Instructor Weekend – with Jay Moledzki and a SURPRISE BONUS INSTRUCTOR will both be teaching Flight 101 & 102 at Skydive Deland!
Flight-1 Courses at Skydive Elsinore
January 27th, 2016
The year 2016 is definitely going to be one for the books, especially at Skydive Elsinore! Flight-1 is kicking off the New Year by hosting the first of many sport courses to come. On January 2 and 3, Performance Designs Factory Team Member Tommy Dellibac hosted Flight 101 and 102 at Skydive Elsinore.
Skydive Elsinore is one of our Campus Dropzones, we’ve called it home for many years. These are our first set of courses after just a short – 5 year – ‘weatherhold’. Born and raised in California, fellow PDFT Member Jonathan Tagle “JT” called Skydive Elsinore his home. JT was a world champion in the world of canopy piloting, a founding member of Flight-1 and was a major contributor to the curriculum that we have today. JT certainly was the main man on campus until he left in 2010 for Dubai - then onto more adventures – continuing on to traverse the world! While his presence, talent and energy is no longer with us and greatly missed, his legacy lives on in many ways, no more so than in the courses we teach and the results they produce.
Now, here to carry on the tradition, the torch has been passed down to Tommy. Tommy is now a permanent fixture in the beautiful rocky state of California and is now calling Skydive Elsinore his new home.
The entire cadre of people that run the dropzone are incredible to work with. Working in tandem with Skydive Elsinore has allowed us to establish our Flight-1 classrooms in their top of the line facilities. Without a doubt - Tommy is coming in full force – starting the New Year off right!
Here’s a list of the next courses at Skydive Elsinore, check the Flight-1 website for more information.

New Flight-1 Instructors
March 19th, 2015
We're extremely excited to welcome these new instructors to the Flight-1 team! Wez Westley from Great Britain and Marco Arrigo from Italy have joined us to expand resources in the European region. Justin Price and Kenneth Gajda are new additions to our North American team and PD Factory Team Member Gage Galle, who is already an experienced instructor for the Flight-1 military side, is now available for sports education. Congratulations all!
The guys recently completed a week of intense training in Deland and where joined by a few of our veteran instructors, Martin Lemay and Philippe Thibodeau, who made the trip down from Canada to continue their training and are now qualified to run 200 series. Pete Allum was here as well and trained for our unique Air-2-Air courses.
We are proud to continue a long and reputable history of quality canopy coaching and instruction. The consideration to bring in new instructors is something we don't take lightly. Each new candidate must complete a thorough application process and be screened by our founding members to ensure we continue to raise the standard of canopy flight education we offer at Flight-1. Once the candidate is invited to join the team, they must still pass in depth training for each module and be evaluated yet again before they are clear to teach! Our specialized instructor training ensures we provide a consistent curriculum to our students throughout the world. As a Flight-1 student you could take a different course with a different instructor at a different geographical location and feel confident in the seamless progression.
Have a look at the bio's of our instructors by clicking F-1 Instructors at the bottom of the page.
Keep an eye out for more Flight-1 courses near you!

Safety Code: How to Avoid a Canopy Collision
March 6th, 2014
USPA’s Safety Day 2014 is right around the corner on March 8th. In support of this year’s Safety Day, Flight-1 is releasing a new safety poster titled Safety Code: How to Avoid a Canopy Collision. Our new safety poster outlines where canopy collisions are most likely to occur and how to avoid them. We are committed to raising the standard of safety in our big blue skies, and believe knowledge is the first step towards doing so. The safety poster is an excerpt from our new 103 Airmanship course which brings the skills you have developed in previous canopy courses into the general skydiving environment.
The Safety Poster is available for download here. Let’s make this the safest year yet.
Flight-1 is running a FREE test event for "Airmanship" (103) at Skydive Deland - details below
January 16th, 2014
At the beginning of this year, we launched a variety of new courses, including the extension to our 100 series, 103 “Airmanship”. It brings the skills you have developed into the general skydiving environment. The course explains how to manage the variety of skydivers on each jump and helps you understand the dropzone environment. It continues to develop your personal skills and understanding in the areas of canopy choice, equipment, malfunctions, and avoiding and successfully dealing with canopy collisions.
For our very first 103, we are running a test event and would like to invite you to enter to become a student in our test event. We are only offering this opportunity to those who have already invested in their canopy piloting skills and completed the 100 series. This test event is FREE to those selected to participate. You only have to give us your feedback on the course and cover your own jumps. As with all our courses, the 103 is a one day course, featuring 5 course jumps. The difference is that you can choose what type of jumps you make during the course as they are not limited to hop and pops. The goal of the course is to be similar to your normal fun jumping.
The course will take place on Sunday 23rd February at Skydive Deland, Florida at 8:30 am, and your instructor will be Ian Bobo. If you can commit to that date, have completed the 100 series, & would like to participate in this FREE test event, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org by Monday 3rd February with your name, phone number, jump numbers, and current canopy. We will have limited slots for this event, so make sure to get your entry in. We’ll announce the participants on Friday 7th February. If you have any questions about the event or how to enter to become a participant, email email@example.com.
Flight-1 introduces new courses in the Flight-1 Canopy Series
January 2nd, 2014
FLIGHT-1 LAUNCHES NEW PRODUCTS FOR 2014 SEASON!
Canopy control market leader, Flight-1, is pleased to announce a number of additional courses to its product line for 2014.
In light of the increased canopy dangers at our increasingly busy dropzones Flight-1 is launching the “Flight-1 103 Airmanship Course”. Flight-1 recognizes that canopy training traditionally focuses on flying alone in a controlled environment. Afterwards the skydiver goes back to normal jumping. The 103 course applies the skills learnt in previous courses to the busy skydiving environment and develops personal skills in areas of equipment and successfully dealing with canopy collisions.
As previously advertised Flight-1 will also be adding the 300 series to the sports portfolio.
The “Flight-1 301 Precision Performance Course” is the course for experienced pilots who want to develop their turns and high performance landings. It introduces a logical progression to increasing power and bringing accuracy into the landing, ready for courses and gates.
The “Flight-1 302 Competition Canopy Piloting Course” covers the fundamentals of competing we all need when new to the competition environment. It helps the pilot focus on what is important and how to manage personal skills and tactics to ensure best performance.
Finally Flight-1 is also launching its exciting flagship Sport Air to Air Program in 2014.
The “Flight-1 201A Flying Relative Course” teaches essential control when flying relative with each other. The student must pass each level in order to progress to the next set of more complex maneuvers. This course offers the fastest learning curve to pure intuitive flying skills.
The “Flight-1 202A Team Flying Course” takes the student into dynamic team flying and landings. Again on successful demonstration of team skills, the pilot is taken into advanced team formations and turns. This is the ultimate “wind tunnel” for canopy pilots.
As with the previous courses offered by Flight-1, these new products have been developed from the vast experience of the PD Factory Team. The comprehensive range of courses offered keeps Flight-1 as the lead provider to the canopy control market.
Price Increase: There is a slight price increase for the Flight-1 range of canopy courses with effect from 1st January 2014. Each course is now 150 USD/120 Euro/100GBP.
For more details of the full range of courses offered, course dates and locations for 2014 and to register online please visit www.flight-1.com/sport.
